  • Description

The Presidents of Mali and Mauritania have been in Tunisia this week for talks with Prime Minister Hedi Nouira and President Bourguiba. There has been no official statement on the outcome of their discussions which were reported to be on bilateral relations.

SYNOPSIS: It is not the first time that the heads of neighbouring Mali and Mauritania have paid joint state visits abroad. President Moussa Traore of Mali arrived in Tunis wearing traditional white hat and robes. He and President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania went to Abu Dhabi together in March. They have also held several joint summits on ways of overcoming problems they share, such as the Sahelian drought. Tunisian Prime Minister Hedi Nouira was at Tunis Airport to greet the two leaders at the start of their 24-hour visit last Wednesday (24 May). The discussions were reportedly comradely, for the three countries have several points in common. All are former French colonies, each has uneasy relations with neighbouring Algeria and the three leaders understand only too well the difficulties of governing countries where many of the people are poor and much of the land is barren. All are eager to obtain more foreign aid and neighbouring visits such as are arranged to investors of their stability.
