Background: Fierce winds sent bushfires roaring through Sydney's northern and southern suburbs on Saturday (25 January). At least 12 homes were destroyed and three firemen taken to hospital with burns.
The fire was fanned by gusts reaching 80 miles (130 kilometres) an hour. Only an abrupt change in wind direction averted more serious damage.
In the biggest blaze (in the outer northern suburb of Castle Hill, where the firemen were overcome) scores of residents were treated on the spot.
Police said about 1,000 people were evacuated during the five-hour blaze which was brought under control after thunderstorms developed.
