  • Description

IN MARSEILLES, A CONFERENCE WAS OPENED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TO DISCUSS GREATER ECONOMIC COOPERATION BETWEEN FRANCE AND AFRICA.

AMONG THE DELEGATES PRESENT WERE THE AMBASSADORS IN PARIS OF SENEGAL, UPPER VOLTA AND IVORY COAST.

THE FIRST CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN 1917 AND BROUGHT TOGETHER MEMBERS OF CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE OF COUNTRIES AROUND THE MEDITERRANEAN. TODAY, THE CONFERENCE HAS GROWN INTO A LARGER BODY GROUPING ALL AFRICAN COUNTRIES AND MADAGASCAR THAT ARE LINKED ECONOMICALLY TO FRANCE.

(THE QUESTION OF CONTINUED FRENCH AID TO OVERSEAS COUNTRIES IS A THORNY ONE IN FRANCE, BUT YESTERDAY PRESIDENT DE GAULLE IN HIS SPEECH TO THE NATION REJECTED ANY IDEA OF ENDING IT.)
