  • Description

West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt arrived in Paris on Monday (3 february) for two days of talks with French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing.

The two statesmen go straight down to their talks at the Elysee Palace.

Her Schmidt was accompanied to the French Capital by his Foreign Minister Hans-Deitrich Genscher and Finance Minister Hans Apel for this latest round of twice-yearly talks.

High on the agenda of the leaders' discussions is expected to be matters concerning Britain's attempt to renegotiate its terms of membership of the European Economic Community (E.E.C.).

Speaking to newsmen just before his departure form Bonn the West German Chancellor said he had an understanding of Britain's problems, and that these must be taken into account. He added the E.E.C. leaders would make a very serious effort at next month's Dublin summit to solve the problems of Britain's membership terms.

Both France and West Germany want Britain to stay in the Common Market...but France is less flexible in its attitude towards British demands. The French are reported to fear that any special treatment offered to be British might undermine the Community's basic principles and is likely to attack the 'Corrective Mechanism' just worked out by the Common Market Commission to meet the British demands.
