  • Description

THE THIRD RACE IN THIS YEAR'S WORLD MOTOR CROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS WAS HELD IN HOLICE, IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA. THE RACE, IN THE 250cc CATEGORY, ATTRACTED 45 RIDERS FROM 15 COUNTRIES. THE MEETING ATTRACTED MORE THAN 50,000 SPECTATORS.

A HEAVY SHOWER OF RAIN SHORTLY BEFORE THE START MADE THE COURSE VERY TREACHEROUS AND THE MACHINES DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. SEVERAL RIDERS CRASHED.

THE FIRST RACE GOT UNDER WAY SHORTLY AFTER A HEAVY DOWNPOUR OF RAIN HAD SWAMPED THE COURSE, MAKING CONDITIONS DIFFICULT AND TREACHEROUS. THE SWEDISH STAR, ALLMAN, WAS AMONG THE FIRST TO FALL.

AFTER ONLY A FEW LAPS, THE COURSE WAS LIKE TREACLE BUT MOST RIDERS KEPT GOING, EVEN THOUGH THE MUD WAS INCHES (CENTIMETRES) DEEP.

ANDERSSEN OF SWEDEN WON THE FIRST RACE WITH RIBERT OF BELGIUM SECOND AND ARBEKOV OF RUSSIA THIRD. BEFORE THE SECOND RACE COULD GET UNDER WAY RIDERS HAD TO CLEAN TO MUD FROM THEIR MACHINES. THE LEAD CHANGED THROUGHOUT THE RACE, WITH THE RUSSIAN, ARBEKOV, ALWAYS UP AMONG THE LEADERS. BUT EVENTUALLY RIBERT WAS THE WINNER WITH ANDERSSEN SECOND.
