  • Description

President Valery Giscard d'Estaing of France called for the end of all discrimination against women when he opened a three-day conference for International Women's Year in Paris on Saturday Some 2,000 of the world's most influential women -- government officials, legislators and trade unionists from four continents -- heard the President warn that "submission and blind dependence will no longer be acceptable or accepted."
The aim of the conference is to discuss the role of women in the modern world. Study groups will be formed to explore the possibilities open to women in the political, economic, cultural, technological, and other fields, as well as family, housing, social justice and the rights of women in the world.

President Giscard d'Estaing told the delegates -- including 35 women cabinet ministers -- that "the promotion of women is not only desirable but inevitable."
The decision of the President to open the meeting was seen as an important gesture of support for Mme. Francoise Giroud, France's Minister for the Feminine Condition and the leader of their delegation.
