    Arab in the Israeli-controlled Gaza Strip Yesterday (Tuesday, 29 September) demonstrated in the streets as they mourned the death of President Nasser.

    As Israeli troops stood by, Gaza came to a standstill. Shops closed and from the public relay system of the mosques came readings from the Koran.

    Israeli troops opened fire to disperse demonstrators at a Gaza refugee camp and a 57 year old woman was reported hurt. The shooting occurred after demonstrators refused to disperse and began building barricades.

    Israeli troops stood by in the Gaza towns but there was little trouble. There was little traffic in the streets. Arabs gathered in groups and there were processions through the streets.

    In Jerusalem police made baton charges and used water cannot to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators during mass mourning processions. The clashes occurred near the Herod Gaza leading into the old walled city. Some 30 were arrested but no injuries were reported. The Arab sector of the city gave the impression of a city under curfew.

    The Jerusalem religious court, the Sharia, has proclaimed three days of mourning for the late President.
