  • Description

Bribe Minister George Pappadopoulos of Greece, who already holds the portfolios of Foreign Affairs and Defense, yesterday (Tuesday) further consolidated his power by taking over the largely ceremonial duties of Regent.

The post had been had by General George Zwitakis since December 1967, when King Constantine went into self-imposed exile following the failure of his counter-coup against the military regime which had taken over under the leadership of the then Artillery Colonel Papadopoulos.

An official announcement from the Prime Minister's office said General Zoitakie had unjustifiably interfered in the Legislative work of the Government - and this was why the Prime Minister was taking over the post of Regent. This is the first major open rift between the officers who staged the May 1967 revolution. Government courses have also strongly denied that the rift had anything to do with a disagreement over policy in the current crisis in relations between Greece and Cyprus.

SYNOPSIS: Prime Minister Papadopoulos of Greece, who already also holds the key posts of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence - taking the oath as Regent on Tuesday. Officiating is the Greek Primate, Archbishop Ieronymos.

The post had been held since 1967 by General Zoitakis - but an announcement from the Prime Minister's office said that he was begin replaced because he had unjustifiably interfered in the Legislative work of the Government. It is the first major open rift between the officers who staged the May 1967 revolution, masterminded by the then Artillery Colonel Papadopoulos. Although General Zoitakis has been opposed to Government policy on the current crisis in Cyprus, official sources maintain that this is not what has caused the change. Whatever the reasons, the new post will undoubtedly consolidate the power of the Prime Minister.
