An international athletics meeting took place in Rome today. Leading athletes from 17 European countries ( Germany, France, Russia, Great Britain, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Norway, Rumania, and Italy) took part.
Undoubtedly the most outstanding performance of the meeting was V.P.Kutz's. In fact, there can hardly have been a more dramatic postscript to the year's athletics than his world recored 5000 metres. After a summer of rather disappointing form, the Russian has ended on a high note by regaining the world record which he first established in the European championships in 1954.
His time for the 5000 metres was 13 mins 35 secs. Kutz has now beaten 13 wins 40 secs four times, and next year he may do 13 wins 30 secs.
At the same meeting youn heather Armitage, of Great Britain, came first in the women's 200 metres; and Lewandowski, Poland won the men's 1,500 metres.
Lukmann, of Yugoslavia, soared to victory in the salto con l'asta (pole jump).
