  • Description

B-52 HEAVY BOMBERS OF THE UK.S. STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND ARE USED AS TACTICAL WEAPONS IN THE VIETNAM CONFLICT. THE HUGE PLANES FLY FORM A BASE ON THE PACIFIC ISLAND OF GUAM AND BOMB TARGETS 2,500 MILES AWAY IN SOUTH VIETNAM, RETURNING AFTERWARDS TO GUAM.

EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING, CREWS OF B-52'S MET IN THE COMMAND ALERT ROOM AT ANDERSON AIR FORCE BASE ON GUAM FOR PRE-MISSION BRIEFING. THEY WERE TOLD THAT THE FIRST WAVE OF THE STRIKE, CODE NAMED POWER PLAY, WOULD BOMB A MOUNTAINOUS JUNGLE ARE CLOSE TO THE CAMBODIAN FRONTIER WHICH WAS THOUGHT TO BE OCCUPIED BY NORTH VIETNAMESE REGULARS. THE SECOND WAVE, CALLED MINK STOLE, WOULD STRIKE SOUTHWEST OF DA NANG AT A ZONE INFILTRATED BY THE VIET CONG.

POWER PLAY'S BOMBING WAS IN SUPPORT OF ELEMENTS OF THE U.S. FIRST INFANTRY DIVISION. MINK STOLE'S MISSION WAS MOUNTED AFTER THREE VIET CONG PRISONERS REVEALED THE POSITION OF THEIR UNIT.

DURING THE BRIEFING, CREWMEN REMOVED SAFETY PINS FROM THE CONVENTIONAL 500-POUND AND 750-POUND BOMBS READY FOR THE RAID.

THEN, STILL BEFORE DAWN THE B-52'S ROARED ALOFT AND FLEW AT MORE THAN 500 MILES AN HOUR AT A HEIGHT OF SIX AND ONE-HALF MILES EACH WITH 20 TONS OF BOMBS ABOARD.

NEAR THE PHILIPPINES, THE PLANES TOOK ON FUEL FROM JET TANKERS WAITING FOR THEM. AT DAYLIGHT, THEY WERE APPROACHING THEIR TARGET AREAS. THEY FLEW OVER ONE AT A TIME WHILE F-102 PROTECTIVE FIGHTERS STREAKED OVERHEAD.

AS THE B-52'S MADE THEIR BOMBING RUNS, COMPUTERS AND RADAR TARGETING DEVICES TOOK OVER. THE RAID HAD BEEN PROGRAMMED INTO THE COMPUTERS AT GUAM; THE FINAL RUN OVER THE TARGET AND THE RELEASE OF THE BOMBS WAS AUTOMATIC.

LITTLE COULD BE SEEN OF THE GROUND BELOW BECAUSE OF THE ALTITUDE OF THE PLANES, AND IT WAS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE EXPLODING BOMBS BECAUSE OF THE SPEED WITH WHICH EACH PLANE TURNED AND STARTED BACK ACROSS THE PACIFIC TO GUAM. THE PLANES HAD FLOWN ABOUT 5,000 MILES IN A LITTLE UNDER 12 HOURS TO DELIVER ABOUT 500 TONS OF BOMBS.
