  • Description

THE COMMISSION SITTING IN ACCRA TO DECIDE ON WHAT KIND OF CONSTITUTION GHANA SHOULD ADOPT HELD A PUBLIC SESSION IN PARLIAMENT HOUSE ON WEDNESDAY (5 APRIL). THE AUDITOR-GENERAL, MR. OSEI AHENKORA, AND CHIEF NII PESEMAKU III WERE AMONG THOSE WHO GAVE EVIDENCE.

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMISSION, MR JUSTICE ADDO, GHANA'S CHIEF JUSTICE, SAID A GOOD DEAL OF WRITTEN EVIDENCE HAD BEEN RECEIVED FROM ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS, AND THAT THE OPEN SESSION WAS BEING HELD TO ENABLE MORE PEOPLE TO EXPRESS THEIR VIEWS ON THE CONSTITUTION.

MR AHENKORA SAID THAT IF THERE WERE TO BE AN EXECUTIVE-PRESIDENT UNDER THE CONSTITUTION, THE APPOINTMENT OF AUDITOR-GENERAL SHOULD RECEIVE THE APPROVAL OF PARLIAMENT.

NII PESEMAKU ASKED THE COMMISSION TO ENSURE THAT THE CHIEF HAD AN IMPORTANT ROLE TO PLAY IN ALL FIELDS OF GOVERNMENTAL ACTIVITY, AND CALLED FOR THE REINTRODUCTION OF THE NATIVE AUTHORITY SYSTEM. HE SAID THAT GHANA'S NEW CONSTITUTION SHOULD ENSURE THAT POLITICIANS DID NOT INTERFERE WITH MATTERS AFFECTING THE CHIEFTAINCY.
