  • Description

Twenty-five heavily armed policemen fired hundreds of shots and lobbed tear gas grenades after surrounding the Black Panther Party's headquarters in Winston-Salem, North Carolina yesterday (Tuesday). The police, investigating the theft of a truck load of meat, claimed they were fired upon from inside the house.

As the police opened fire, bullets riddled walls and shattered window-frames of the two-storey building. But, despite the fusillade, no-one was hurt.

Police called for the occupants of the building to surrender end two negroes walked out with their hands above their heads -- one a 15-year-old boy.

During the subsequent search of the house, the police said that they found three guns, ammunition and 20 boxes of frozen meat alleged to have been stolen earlier.
