  • Description

The barren desert of Northern Arizona..has become a training ground..for America's moon-bound astronauts. Greg Cooke reports:
"Northeast from Winslow..in the middle of nowhere..is Castle Buttes. It's unusual..in that its geological characteristics..are similar to the moon's surface. Primitive Indian hogans dot the area..but the strange buttes draw little but passive indifference..from the isolated people. But it brings the nation's astronauts a step closer to the moon.

"Here in a relatively small area..astronauts may analyze and record many type of rocks and natural formations..believed to resemble those they will find on the moon.

"Half of NASA's astronauts are here today..equipped with tape recorders, maps and picks. It's practise in the important later job..of recognizing and recording samples on the moon.

"Tomorrow they move to Meteor Crater..west of here..where aeons ago..a heavenly body crashed to earth and dug a mile-deep hole.
