  • Description

Japan,s four-masted training ship "Nippon Maru" arrived in San Francisco Bay Monday July 15 with 98 cadets, 20 officers and a crew of 47 for a week's goodwill visit.

The 328-foot long barque tied up at Pier 39 at midnight. After docking Captain Fumio Shintani, first officer Yogi Murohara and Chief Engineer Tatsuo Hayashi leave ship to pay respects to city officials.

After a briefing on deck, the cadets are given shore leave and stroll past the surviving ship "Balclutha", a restoration project. Visiting Fisherman's Wharf, they mingle with the vacationing crowds and see the sights.

Favorite attraction that interests the cadets are the tiny cable cars and the turntable. They join the hundreds of other tourists and jam the tiny cars to capacity.
