  • Description

After watching the May Day parade in Red Square from the Lenin Mausoleum, Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser, President of the United Arab Republic, toured the Kremlin for the rest of the day.

The President and his party walked round the Armoury and examined the exhibits, on leaving the Arab leader was presented with an album containing photographs of the various items shown in the Armoury.

Respectfully, the party stepped into Lenin's study and gazed round the room, probably visualising the first Russian Communist leader working at his disk, formulating the plans that were to raise peasant Russia to a high level of industrialisation in a very short time.

Incongruously, President nasser and his governmental colleagues visited the Church of the Assumption that constitutes one of the landmarks familiar to Moscow citizens.

Colonel Nasser arrived at Moscow Airport on Tuesday, 29th. April, and was met by the Russian President Mr. Voroshilov and the Moscow guards band. He will spend 18 days in Russia.

The following day he had talks with Mr. Khrushchev, the Soviet Premier, and then toured Moscow sight-seeing, including visit to a Metro station. Later in the day President nasser and his party were guests of honour at the Bolshoi Theatre, where the scheduled opera, Verdi's "Aida", was replaced by a special performance of the ballet "Swan Lake". This last minute change was decided on because of the embarrassing fact that "Aida" was first performed in Cairo, in 1871, to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal.

Most of the Colonel's visit will be taken up with tours of military installations, cultural and educational institutions throughout the country.
