    Background: Lebanese Premier Selim Al-Hoss on Thursday (23 August) toured ???outhern villages and towns in Lebanon under repeated bombardment from Israel and Christian rightist artillery. The day before is visit they pouned the Palestinian stronghold of Nabativeh and shelled the city of tyre and nearby Rashidieh refugee camp.

    SYNOPSIS: The Palestinian refugee camp. Rashidieh was one of the targets hit by 175 millimetre artillery.

    Nabativeh was bombarded -- with one shell exploding every minute. A teenage student was killed and eight wounded when a convent school was hit by four rockets.

    Residents said that the latest bombardment was the heaviest for several months.

    A united Nations spokesman said that Major Said Haddad's Christian militia poured seven hundred and fifty shells into the communities.

    The spokesman said the rightists used tanks to back up their artillery bombardment. More than six hundred artillery and mortar shells and more than one hundred tank rounds his the village in the course of the day.

    In tyre, the local government House was heavily damaged, four police cars destroyed and about twenty houses damaged. Palestinian sources blamed the intensity of the attacks on the israelis linking it to the growing international support for an independent palestinian state.
