    THE ARCHBISHOP OF MUNICH, CARDINAL JULIUS DOEPFNER, TODAY (SUNDAY) CONSECRATED A NEW CATHOLIC MEMORIAL CHURCH NEAR THE PLOETZENSEE PRISON IN WEST BERLIN, WHERE MANY VICTIMS OF THE NAZI REGIME WERE EXECUTED DURING WORLD WAR TWO.

    ON SATURDAY, AN OPEN-AIR CEREMONY WAS HELD IN A NEARBY SQUARE.ROMAN CATHOLICS FROM MANY PARTS OF GERMANY ATTENDED.OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES SENT REPRESENTATIVES, INCLUDING BISHOP DR.LACH FROM YUGOSLAVIA AND ARCHBISHOP CASTELLI FROM ROME.

    AT THE CEREMONY A DECLARATION WAS READ: "WE, THE CATHOLICS OF GERMANY, REMEMBER IN HUMBLE GRATITUDE ALL CHRISTIANS WHO BORE WITNESS WITH THEIR OWN BLOOD TO THE FREEDOM OF MIND AND FAITH DURING THE NATIONAL SOCIALIST REGIME FROM 1933 TO 1945.AMONG THE HOST OF MARTYRS ARE CHRISTIANS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE, FROM GERMANY AND OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES." THE DECLARATION ALSO REFERRED TO HUNDREDS OF PRIESTS WHO DIED IN THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS OF SACHSENHAUSEN (NEAR BERLIN) AND DACHAU (NEAR MUNICH), AND TO THE "GREAT NUMBER OF CATHOLIC LAITY EXECUTED AT PLOETZENSEE".

    THE CONSECRATION SERVICE AT THE CHURCH -- CALLED ST MARY, QUEEN OF THE MARTYRS -- WAS ATTENDED BY MAYOR WILLY BRANDT.
