  • Description

WILD WEATHER, UNUSUAL IN NOVEMBER, HAS CAUSED FLOODING IN HOLLAND AND ISOLATED SEVERAL VILLAGES IN NORTHERN ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND.

GALE FORCE WINDS AND WAVES 100 FOOT (30 METRES) HIGH HAVE LASHED INTO HOLLAND'S SOUTHERN COASTLINE BREAKING SEVERAL DYKES IN THE BIESBOS AREA.

MORE THAN 30 FARMERS IN SOUTHERN HOLLAND AWOKE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO FIND THE NORTH SEA COVERING THEIR FIELDS. PARTIAL EVACUATION TOOK PLACE DURING LAST NIGHT IN CASE OF FURTHER FLOODING AND THERE WERE FURTHER DIFFICULTIES WHEN THE MAIN ELECTRIC POWER LINE TO THE AREA WAS RESTORED WITHIN TWO HOURS.

MEANWHILE ENGLAND IS HAVING BAD WEATHER TROUBLES TOO. AT ONE TIME, SNOW BLOCKED ALL ROUTES INTO SCOTLAND AND TODAY ONLY TWO ROADS WERE OPEN. DRIFTS 18 FOOT (6 METRES) DEEP HAVE BEEN CAUSED IN SEVERAL PLACES AND ONE MAN IS REPORTED MISSING. ALTHOUGH EVERY AVAILABLE SNOW-CLEARING DEVICE HAS BEEN PUT TO WORK, SEVERAL VILLAGES HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY ISOLATED BY THE SNOW. IN COUNTY DURHAM THE ROYAL AIR FORCE DROOPED THOUSANDS TO POUNDS OF CONCENTRATED FOOD, INCLUDING TINNED MILK FOR BABIES, TO VILLAGES THAT WERE RUNNING SHORT OF SUPPLIES.

NOW THE FORECAST IS BETTER, WITH ONLY THE NORMAL RATION OF BAD WEATHER EXPECTED FOR NORTHERN EUROPE.
