  • Description

About 400 uniformed Italian soldiers wearing red scarves and giving clenched first salutes joined left-wing demonstrators in Rome on Friday (25 April) to mark the 30th anniversary of the liberation of northern Italy from occupying German forces.

The demonstration was organised by two extreme left-wing organisations. It was also intended to be a show of solidarity with the Armed Forces Movement in Portugal.

It is the second time a group of uniformed soldiers have taken part in a left-wing demonstration. The first was in Rome the week before. In Friday's march the soldiers held their hands or newspapers to their faces to avoid being photographed.
