  • Description

A 22-year-old unknown Japanese runner Mineteru Sakamoto on Sunday (February 9) become the first local athlete to win the seventh Kyoto International Marathon in three years.

The young runner overtook the favoured Finnish athlete Seppo Nikkari in the closing stages and sprinted home in the time of two hours 17 minutes 15.4 seconds. Only four metres (feet) separated second place getter Kenji Kaya of Japan and Nikkari after the 26 kms (42 mile) marathon.

A total of 245 runners, including 11 foreigners, took part in the race. South Korea's Park Chang Youl came sixth. American ronald Wayne faded out of the race after only 5 kms (3 miles).

Sakamento ran a perfect race. He stayed up with the leaders until the half way mark and then put in his bid. As the runners made their way through the streets of Kyoto he improved his position until the main body of the field was far behind. He entered the Kyoto Stadium two minutes ahead of the second runner and held that advantage to the tape.
