  • Description

COLONEL MALUDIN SIMBOLON, WHO IS SAID TO HAVE FIRST RAISED THE BANNER OF REVOLT AND ARMED REBELLION IN SUMATRA IN 1958, SURRENDERED TO INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT FORCES AUGUST 14 AT THE REMOTE JUNGLE VILLAGE OF BALIGE IN NORTH SUMATRA.

SIMBOLON, WHOSE 11,000 SUPPORTERS SURRENDERED WITH HIM, TOOK CONTROL OF THE NORTH SUMATRAN CAPITAL OF MEDAN AT THE HEIGHT OF THE REBELLION. THEY WERE OUSTED FROM THE CITY BY GOVERNMENT TROOPS AND WERE FORCED INTO THE JUNGLES. THERE THEY CONTINUED RESISTANCE BUT LACK OF LIAISON BETWEEN REBEL LEADERS AND JUNGLE HAZARDS TOOK THEIR TOLL.

INDONESIAN GENERAL GATOT SUBROTO WELCOMED COLONEL SIMBOLON AND HIS REBEL ARMY "BACK INTO THE FOLD OF THE INDONESIAN REPUBLIC" AND SAID THAT FOREIGN INTERFERENCE HAD PROLONGED THE REBELLION. HE THOUGHT THAT INDONESIA'S INTERNAL STRIFE WOULD HAVE ENDED BY 1962.

NEWSMEN AT BALIGE WERE TOLD BY SIMBOLON THAT ALTHOUGH HIS FORCES WERE STILL INTACT, DISSENTION AND HIS ANXIETY FOR THE FUTURE OF HIS YOUNG FOLLOWERS PROMPTED HIM TO GIVE HIMSELF UP. HE ALSO REALISED THAT THE ENERGIES OF THE STATE WERE BEING WASTED IN A FUTILE CIVIL WAR AND THIS WAS A TIME WHEN EVERYBODY SHOULD WORK FOR NATIONAL RECONSTRUCTION.
