Background: Greek champions Panathinaikos beat Bruges 1-0 in their second leg European Cup round soccer tie in Athens on Wednesday (2 November), but they still went out of the competition. Brugs, the champions of Belgium, had won the first leg 2-0, and although the Greeks went close to adding to their one goal, they failed to make up the deficit.
SYNOPSIS: Bruges, in the white shirts kicked off, and the early stages pushed the ball around confidently as they went all out to add to their first leg lead.
The Belgians concentrated their attacks down the wings, switching the ball quickly from midfield to the flanks. This move started by Leskens breaks down, when Van der Eyken is dispossessed. But their next attack almost broke the deadlock. The ball is played into the area, and Lambert slams in a fierce left foot shot, which Constantinou does well to push away. The ball rebounds and is finally scrambled away by a defender.
Panathinaikos hit back strongly and almost grabbed a goal before half time but this header is pushed round.
After the interval Panathinaikos piled on the pressure, and a through ball from Alvaraz nearly lets in the Greek champions. The first shot is pushed away, and from the rebound a second drive goes high and wide.
By the stage Panathinaikos were playing with a lot of confidence, and the Belgians were penned back in their own half. The Greeks were creating a lot of chances, and after a low right foot drive had one gone wide of the far post Tzorgevits is only just off target with a climbing header.
A goal seemed likely to come for Panathiniakos, and although this move on the right broken down, they did score in the 83rd minute. Rzorgevits crossed from the right, the ball aluded the Bruges defence and was tapped in from close range. Sadly for the Greeks one goal was not enough.
