    Australia's Rod Laver clinched a place in the Davis Cup Final for his country with a memorable victory over JiriHrebec of Czechoslovakia in Melbourne on Sunday (18 November).

    Laver's five set defeat of Hrebec gave Australia a 3-1 winning lead in the semi final.

    Laver who is 35 had to call on all the experience of his long career to beat 24 year old Hrebec who played brilliant and tenacious tennis. And when he took the match point Australia's tennis millionaire received a five minute ovation from nearly 12,000 spectators at the Kooyong Stadium.

    Hrebec had saved two match points against Laver's serve before finally going under 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a match that has been described as one of the finest seen in Australia in 20 years.

    John Newcombe set the seal on Australia's triumph with an easy straight sets win over the current Wimbledon champion Jan Kodes, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

    On Saturday Laver and Ken Reosewell had set Australia on the way to victory with a three hours 40 minute 6-4, 14-12, 7-9, 8-6 win over Kodes and Vladimer Zetnik.

    Australia will meet the present Davis Cup holders, the United States in the final at Cleveland, Ohio on November 30 and December 1 & 2.

    SYNOPSIS: At Melbourne on Sunday, Australia's Rod Laver receives service from Jiri Hrebec of Czechoslovakia in the tennis match that decided which country would play the Untied States in the Davis Cup Final. The Australian team were already two one in the lead. Laver lost this point.

    He also dropped the first set to the young tenacious Czech.

    Thirty five year old Laver had to call on all his years of experience to cope with an opponent eleven years younger.

    Many of Hrebec's returns of serve were brilliant and the game developed into a match described as the best seen in Australia for twenty years.

    But the second set was one of Laver's best and he went on to win it six-three The match went to five sets before Laver's final triumph.

    And Australia had a winning lead in the semi final.

    In the remaining match John Newcombe of Australia serves against the reigning Wimbledon champion Jan Kodes.

    Newcombe set the seal on the Australian victory with an easy straight sets victory.

    Earlier in the semi final Newcombe had lost to Hrebec.

    Newcombe finished the match with an ace serve that gave Kodes no chance -- to give the Australians a convincing four one win.

    The final against the United states will begin on November 30.
