Background: About 100 khmer Rouge insurgents attacked a village ten miles (16 kms) west of the Khmer Republic capital of Phnom Penh on Monday (14 October) killing 17 villagers and wounding many others.

Only three of the 17 killed were men. The rest were women and children.

Villagers told newsmen that the guerrilla band attacked the Phum Taphem hamlet at mighight, firing machine-guns at random and throwing grenades into the thatched huts. At one point two young children were dragged out and killed in front of their parents.

khmer Government troops were rushed to the village close to Phnom Penh's airport. But the attackers had disappeared by the time they arrived.

Other guerrilla units broke through the capital's defence perimeter the same night (14 October) firing ten rockets at the airport and a nearby government radio communications centre. Neither was hit but some civilians were wounded.

The Khmer Rough insurgents are expected to step up their attacks during the week leading up to the United Nations debate on the khmer Republic. The debate is expected to begin around the 19th of October.

SYNOPSIS: The villagers of Phum Taphem had no money to buy proper coffins for the dead. The bodies were buried in makeshift coffins made from packing cases. The khmer Rouge insurgents bayonetted several of their victims to death.

The khmer Rouge insurgents have stepped up their attacks on government forces in the past few days. The Cambodian Military Command reported last week that over four hundred insurgents had been killed in clashes around the provincial capital of kompong Chhnang forty-six miles northwest of Phnom Penh.
