Diplomatic activity is continuing to try to resolve the conflict between Uganda and Tanzania. Envoys from both countries have been in Kenya for talks with President Daniel Arap Moi and other Kenyan leaders.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Timothy Ayipo, a special envoy from Tanzania's President Julius Nyerere arrived at Wilson Airport, Nairobi on Wednesday (8 November) for talks with President Moi. Six days earlier, according to the official Kenyan News Agency, the Kenyan Head of State called on Uganda to withdraw its troops from a strip of Tanzanian territory it had occupied during the previous week. He wanted the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to deal with the conflict. Uganda was worried about reports that Kenya had agreed to a Tanzanian request to cut off Uganda's oil supplies which cross Kenya from Mombasa.
The Ugandan party, which arrived on Saturday (11 November), contained President Amin,s special adviser, Bob Astles. He was to tell a news conference later that Ugandan-Tanzanian relations had been in a void for seven years.
