  • Description

Two great finals for the men today at Cardiff Empire Games saw the upset of two favourites and the setting up of two Games records.

Both races were thrillers from the start -- the 880 yards in which Englishman Brian Hewson, at the top of his form, was expected two in; and the three miles, with Australian Albert Thomas, the world record holder.

Hewson was the first to fall, toppled by the only other runner in the race who was given a chance, the Australian miler Herb Elliott. This was sweet revenge for Elliott, beaten by Hewson in the three As championships in London recently. Both men were in the first three for nearly the whole of the race, with Elliott leading most of the way.

It was a race of shrewd tactic. At the bell and the halfway mark, a slow time of 59 secs. had been recorded. Then Elliott broke away, pursued by Hewson and the powerfully-built New Zealander D.I.B. Smith. The pace hotted and at the last bend Elliott had set up a lead to three yards. Desperately, Hewson tried to catch him but just had not the speed left to match such cracking pace. The last quarter of a lap was one of the fastest ever run and Elliott broke the tape in min. 49.3 secs. for a Games record. Mike Rawson, of England, was third.

In the three miles, the small and phenomenal Thomas, striding inches more than his height would suggest, led for two miles and seemed to dictate the pace at his will. At first, in the strong wind, lap times were well ahead of record schedule. At first, in the strong wind, lap times were well ahead of recorded schedule. Then Thomas was boxed in by one of the Kenyans, protested by waving his arms, went to the front again and slowed the race considerably.
