  • Description

Bobby Wilson, Britain's last hope in the men's singles tennis championship at Wimbledon, was soundly beaten June 29 in the quarter-finals, by Australian player, R. Emerson: 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Emerson, from Queensland, won through in 59 minutes. Wilson, seeded No. 5, was outserved and outvolleyed by a tougher, powerful and much more determined opponent. Whatever chance he had of holding his own, Wilson lost in the middle of the second set. Defeat became evident when the British player lost the seventh game -- turning point in the second set and decider of the vital match.

Last year Wilson suffered a close defeat in the quarter finals against the eventual winner, Ashley J. Cooper.

Australia and the United States are the only countries left in the mens singles championship. Surprise victory was gained by B. Mackay (USA) over Australia's Neil Fraser 5-7, 10-8, 0-6, 6-3, 6-1. Mackay will meet Australian R. Laver in the semi-finals, while fellow countryman, Olmedo, seeded No. 1. is matched against Emerson.
