Background: THE SEVEN-YEAR EMERGENCY WHICH ENDED IN KENYA IN JANUARY 1960 LEFT IN ITS WAKE A GRAVE SOCIAL PROBLEM - THE PROBLEM OF KENYA'S UNWANTED CHILDREN. ROAMING THE STREETS OF NAIROBI, THE CAPITAL, ARE HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF THEM. THEY HAVE NO PARENTS AND NO HOME. NOW OPENED IN KENYA IS A FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGN TO HELP THEM. WELL UNDER WAY IN NAIROBI, MAY 3-4, THE CAMPAIGN IS ORGANISED BY THE YOUTH COUNCIL OF KENYA SOME OF WHOSE MEMBERS ARE YOUNG NATIVE ORPHANS THEMSELVES.

OUR CAMERAMAN REPORTED: NEVER HAVE CHILDREN BEEN SO DESTITUTE, HUNGRY, HOMELESS AND UNCARED FOR AS THESE YOUNGSTERS HERE IN NAIROBI. ACCOMPANIED BY A CHILD WELFARE OFFICER, HE WENT IN SEARCH OF THESE LOST CHILDREN - AND AMONG THE BULLRUSHES OF THE NAIROBI RIVER COURSING THROUGH THE CAPITAL - SURPRISED AN ELEVEN-YEAR OLD AFRICAN BOY ASLEEP IN HIS HIDEOUT - A HOME OF CARDBOARD, AND RAG FOR A BED.

HE WAS TAKEN TO A BOYS' WELFARE CENTRE IN THE CITY. MANY OTHERS LIKE HIM RECEIVE SUCCOUR THERE. ONE OF THEM WAS A BOY WHO WHEN FOUND IN THE STREETS WAS SNIFFING A RAG SOAKED IN PETROL - A TRICK TO ALLEVIATE THE PANGS OF HUNGER - HUNGER THAT TAXES THEM TO THE CITY'S DUST BINS IN SEARCH OF SCRAPS.

THE CAMPAIGN IS UNDER THE THEME OF "YOUTH HELPS YOUTH" - AMONG THE FIRST TO BUY CAMPAIGN BADGES WERE THE CHILDREN OF LEADING AFRICAN POLITICIANS IN KENYA, INCLUDING THE 10-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF MR. JOMO KENYATTA, AND THE YOUNG FAMILY OF DEPUTY GOVERNOR MR. ERIC GRIFFITHS-JONES.

THE SPONSORS, MAY 3, IN AN APPEAL TO CHILDREN OF ALL RACES IN KENYA SAID HALF A MILLION BADGES TO RAISE FUNDS ARE GOING OUT FOR SALE IN ALL SCHOOLS AND YOUTH CENTRES. THE BADGE-SELLING CAMPAIGN IS ALSO TO BE OPENED IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND OTHER COUNTRIES.
