  • Description

THE BRIDGE AT AYIOS THEODOROS, IN SOUTHERN CYPRUS, HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACES IN THE VILLAGE FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS WITH BULLETS WHISTLING OVER IT AS GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS FOUGHT IN THE NARROW STREETS. BUT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) BRITISH TROOPS OF THE U.N. FORCE ENTERED THE VILLAGE AND A CEASE-FIRE WAS ARRANGED SO THAT WOMEN AND CHILDREN COULD BE EVACUATED. ALSO EVACUATED WAS AN ELDERLY SICK GREEK MAN AND HIS WIFE FROM THEIR HOME IN THE TURKISH QUARTER.

BRITISH TROOPS CARRYING THE U.N. FLAG LED THE EVACUATION PARTY ACROSS THE BRIDGE, THE MAN ON A STRETCHER AND HIS WIFE HOBBLING ALONG ON THE ARM OF A SOLDIER. ONCE SAFELY ACROSS AND ASSURED THAT HER HUSBAND WAS COMFORTABLE, SHE GAVE A MOTHERLY 'THANK YOU' KISS TO THE SOLDIERS.
