  • Description

MAY DAY (1ST MAY) WAS MARKED IN ZAMBIA WITH A LARGE PEACEFUL RALLY IN LUSAKA, ADDRESSED BY VICE PRESIDENT MAINZA CHONA. AMONGST THE CROWD WAS A DELEGATION FROM THE PEOPLE'S LIBERATION MOVEMENT OF ANGOLA (M.P.L.A), IDENTIFIED BY THE ORGANISATION'S OWN FLAG.

IN HIS SPEECH, VICE PRESIDENT CHONA REFERRED TO RECENT 'DIALOGUE' BETWEEN ZAMBIA'S PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA AND SOUTH AFRICAN PREMIER JOHN VORSTER. ALTHOUGH THE TEXT OF THESE MESSAGES BETWEEN THE TWO LEADERS HAS NOT BEEN MADE PUBLIC, THERE HAS BEEN MUCH SPECULATION AND SEVERAL DENIALS. PRIME MINISTER VORSTER, FOR INSTANCE, HAS STRONGLY REFUTED RUMOURS THAT IN ONE SUCH DIALOGUE WITH ZAMBIA HE EXPRESSED HIS FAVOUR OF MAJORITY RULE IN RHODESIA. PRESIDENT KAUNDA IN TURN HAS PERSONALLY REJECTED CHARGES BY MR. VORSTER THAT HE HAD BEEN GUILTY OF DOUBLE-TALK IN EXCHANGES BETWEEN THEM. MR. CHINA TOLD HIS ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE THAT DR. KAUNDA HAD READ ALL LETTERS FROM MR. VORSTER TO THE ZAMBIAN CABINET, THEN HIS SUBSEQUENT REPLIES TO SOUTH AFRICA. HE SAID THE CABINET HAD BEEN WELL SATISFIED BY THE REPLIES.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF HIS SPEECH, MR. CHONA READ A MESSAGE OF FRIENDSHIP FROM PRESIDENT TUBMAN OF LIBERIA TO PRESIDENT LAUNDA.
