  • Description

Evonne Goolagong displayed her new determined spirit when she defeated fellow Australian Margaret Court 6-3, 7-5 in the New South Wales women's single title at Sydney's White City Stadium on Sunday (22 December). It was only the third time in her career that the 23-year-old Miss Goolagong had beaten long-tie rival, Mr.s Court. The first was in the Victorian Open in 1971 and the second at Wimbledon the same year.

Miss Goolagong displayed a new-found "killer instinct", probably picked up during a stint with World Team Tennis in the Untied States this year.

After winning the first set, 6-3, Miss Goolagong was trailing 2-5 in the second, and appeared to be suffering form her old complaint of lack of concentration. However, she fought back to take the set 7-5, thus robbing Mrs. Court of her 10th State title.

However, Mr.s Court - on the comeback trail after having a baby - hopes to avenge the defeat at this week's Australian championships in Melbourne.
