  • Description

HUNDREDS OF AFRICANS MARCHED THROUGH NAIROBI TO KENYA'S PARLIAMENT BUILDING YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) IN A DEMONSTRATION OF SUPPORT FOR ALDERMAN CHARLES RUBIA WHO RESIGNED AS THE CITY'S MAYOR ON MONDAY.

ALDERMAN RUBIA RESIGNED FROM OFFICE IN PROTEST AGAINST WHAT HE CALLED "DIMINISHING REGARD FOR THE OFFICE OF MAYOR IN THIS CITY". AT A PRESS CONFERENCE HE SAID HE FOUND IT "HUMILIATING AS A HOLDER OF HONORARY OFFICE TO CONTINUALLY ASSERT THE MAYOR'S POSITION IN FACE OF MINISTERIAL, POLITICAL AND TRIBAL JEALOUSIES."
HE SAID THE "FINAL STRAW CAME TODAY WHEN I WAS SUBPOENAED BY THE MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE INFORMATION RELATING TO NON-PAYMENT OF DUES TO THE CITY COUNCIL IN AN INVESTIGATION WHICH HAS BEEN ORDERED INTO THE DISQUALIFICATION OF COUNCILLORS".

IN A STATEMENT ON MONDAY THE KENYA MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT SAID IT WAS WITH REGRET THAT THE MINISTRY HAD HEARD OF THE MAYOR'S RESIGNATION. WHEN A COUNCILLOR'S DISQUALIFICATION WAS BROUGHT TO THE MINISTRY'S NOTICE, AND IT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY INFORMED THAT THERE WERE PROBABLY OTHER COUNCILLORS LIABLE FOR DISQUALIFICATION, THE MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONSIDERED IT HIS DUTY TO ORDER AN INVESTIGATION.
