  • Description

Hundreds of people from the Asogli area of Ghana poured into the town of Ho on Sunday (27 September) for a grand durbar -- an annual celebration to mark the end of the yam festival.

Chiefs from the area arrived with entourages of dancers and villagers to celebrate the success of the crops and to recall the first farmers who migrated to the area from Notse-Gbome -- now Togo -- give or six centuries ago.

Upon arrival the first farmers planted crops such as cassava, yams and rice. The crops have been maintained to this day.

The grand durbar marks the end of the yam festival which follows the harvesting of the crops. After the harvest, farmers offer their first crop to the ancestral gods and fetishes of the area and rejoice for having escaped from misfortunes during harvesting.

The guest of honour this year was Major General L.A. Okai who deputised for the Head of State.
