  • Description

With emergency law imposed in the Luluabourg area of the Belgian Congo after inter-tribal fighting caused 18 deaths, troops patrolled villages, checked captured arms and searched for more suspects. In two days of search 130 were in gaol.

Among the weapons seized were poisoned arrows and an ancient Arab rifle. The tribal fighting by war-painted Luluas and their traditional adversaries, the Balubas, put sixty of them in hospital, most of them with severe injuries.

Other injured were village people of either side caught up in the tribal conflict. In arson attacks 70 huts in their villages were burnt. Fearful of further violence, many villagers fled their homesteads and with their belongings sought peace in other areas.

The conflict began with the killing of a Baluba tribesman at a local election meeting. Age-old tribal hostility coupled with different poetical opinions at a time when the Congo is seeking independence set off a chain of violence anew following the Leopoldville and Stanleyville bloodshed.
