  • Description

The continuing demonstrations by South Korea's Democratic Members of Parliament against the new Government Security bill were filmed by Visnews Jan 13, when a last minute attempt by the Democrats to stop the bill in an extraordinary session of the assembly failed due to the pre-arranged absence of all Government-supporting Liberal members of Parliament. Meanwhile police broke up several Democratic protest meetings in Seoul city centre.

The security bill, proposed by the Government and backed by the Liberal party in the autumn of 1958, purports to crush Communist infiltration and espionage activities reported on the increase in South Korea.

Neither the special session of the National Assembly on Jan 13, nor the Assembly fistfights in December, - Democrats staged a sit-down strike and were forcibly removed by police and security guards who injured several M.P.s - have prevented the bill from becoming law on Jan 15 with President Syngman Rhee's approval.

The Democrats have organized a nation-wide public movement against the security law, which they charge will lead to a one-party dictatorship, endanger the freedom of press, and violate human rights.
