  • Description

THE WORLD RECORD FOR THE BANTAM-WEIGHT PRESS EVENT WAS BROKEN DURING A WEIGHT-LIFTING CONTEST HELD IN THE PEKING STADIUM ON FEBRUARY 27.

TWELVE NATIONAL RECORDS WERE BROKEN 15 TIMES BY 8 OF THE COMPETITORS DURING THE DAY. IN THE FEATHER-WEIGHT CLASS, CHEN CHING-KAI SET A NEW NATIONAL RECORD WITH A TOTAL LIFT OF 357.5 KILLOGRAMMES (788 LBS).

IT WAS CHEN CHING-KAI'S YOUNGER BROTHER, CHEN MAN-LIN, WHO BROKE THE WORLD RECORD. IN THE LAST TWO YEARS THIS YOUNG WEIGHT-LIFTER HAS BROKEN 11 NATIONAL RECORDS.

HIS WINNING LIFT WAS 118 KILLOGRAMMES (260 LBS) -- MORE THAN TWICE HIS OWN WEIGHT. THE PREVIOUS WORLD RECORD OF 117.5 KGS WAS SET LAST YEAR BY FERNANDO BAEZ CRUZ OF PUERTO RICO. THIS NEW RECORD IS THE SEVENTEENTH TO BE ESTABLISHED BY WEIGHTLIFTERS FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA SINCE 1956.
