    The world's two best pole vaulters were matched against each other at E1 Paso, Texas, on Tuesday (May 23) -- and the result was a new double world record. Sweden's Kjell Issakson and American Bob seagren both cleared 18 feet 4 1/4 inches (5.59 metres). This was two and a quarter inches better than the world record set by Issakson only last month.

    Seagren was the first to clear the new record height. Issakson emulated him a few minutes later. Both men then tried to clear 18 feet 6 inches (5.585 metres) but failed in three attempts.
