    TRANSCRIPT (SEQUENCE ONE):

WEINBERGER: "These are, these are things that could be comprehended within the eighty-four million that we have had, remember only about twenty of that has been authorised and what is important is to know that there is a steady and consistent rate of re-supply available and that enables them to plan longer-term projects."

Background: United States Secretary of Defence Caspar Weinberger has visited El Salvador on the second day of his three-day Central American trip. He arrived at a training camp in San Vicente Province by helicopter and confirmed that he is trying to increase US aid to the country. Mr. Weinberger was briefed on the military action in the country, where the right wing government is facing increasing attacks from left-wing guerrillas in the economically important San Vicente province. The region is a testing ground for a US-sponsored pacification programme aimed at combining military and civic action to oust the guerrillas and win the support of the civilians. Officials say hundreds of El Salvadoran people have moved back into the rural areas since the programme began in June. Mr. Weinberger left the province to visit the USS 'New Jersey', a battleship stationed off the Pacific coast of El Salvador and Nicaragua. The Defence Secretary agreed that the El Salvadoran government was interested in negotiating with the rebels and he re-affirmed that the US would continue to supply economic and military aid to the government.
