  • Description

Between 3 and 4 thousand elementary and high school children gathered in Independence Park in central Jerusalem on Wednesday afternoon to protest against the murder of the Israeli athletes in Munich, and against the decision to go on with the games Hundreds of the children turned up in their school sports uniforms and were black bands and ribbons of mourning. They listened to several young speakers -- including one who read a poem about the slaughter.

The Minister of the Interior, Dr Joseph Burg, also addressed the crowd. He said he had not come to judge right and what was wrong. But people could draw their own conclusions from the fact that even after what had happened, the games were going on. Banners carried by the children included signs in Hebrew which roughly translated read "This murder is not sport" "We shall avenge their blood" "Jewish blood is not for sale"
As the crowd of young people packed the park, soldiers armed with rifles and sub machine guns stood guard on nearby buildings.
