    LIBYA'S EXPANDING OIL INDUSTRY RECEIVED A BOOST YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WHEN THE LIBYAN MONARCH, KING IDRIS, FORMALLY OPENED A NEW OIL TERMINAL AT TOBRUK.

    THE TERMINAL WILL SERVE THE SARIR OIL FIELD IN THE CALANSCIO SAND SEA, 320 MILES (515 K.M.) FROM THE COAST.

    IT IS ONLY FIVE YEARS SINCE LIBYA BEGAN EXPORTING OIL. LAST YEAR 70-MILLION TONS OF CRUDE OIL WERE SHIPPED FROM LIBYA.

    THE THIRTY-FOUR-INCH (88c.M.) PIPELINE FROM SARIR TO TOBRUK WILL CARRY 5-MILLION TONS OF CRUDE OIL EACH DAY. THE PIPELINE, CROSSING SOME OF THE INHOSPITABLE TERRAIN IN LIBYA, AND THE TERMINAL INSTALLATIONS COST NEARLY GBP30-MILLION LIBYAN.

    THE TERMINAL IS ON THE SOUTHERN SHORE OF TOBRUK HARBOUR AT A SITE KNOWN AS MARSA AL HARICA. IT PROVIDES A DEEP ANCHORAGE AND CAN ACCOMMODATE TANKERS OF UP TO 100-THOUSAND TONS DEADWEIGHT.
