  • Description

A new terrorist attack Saturday (November 11) shattered the tense calm of the British Middle East Protectorate of Aden as it prepared for the withdrawal, later this month, of British peace-keeping troops
For months two rival Arab organizations, the National Liberation Front and FLOSY, a pro-Egyptian group, have been attempting to wrest power from each other so as to be in control of the country when the long-awaited pull-out of British troops actually occurs.

Last reports say the NLF has won out over FLOSY, principally because the British-trained South Arabian Army joined forces with the Nationalist group to oppose the pro-Egyptian organization.

The previously secret leadership of the NLF then made themselves known to demand immediate recognition as the sole representative of the people of Aden. But recognition was not forthcoming immediately.

British patrols continue to criss-cross the country keeping the peace. Then, the day this report was filmed (Saturday), a mortar a began firing in the city. Argyle and Sutherland Highlander troops rushed to take up defensive positions and began heavy fire at the location where the mortar was believed to be.

Later in the day, several three-inch mortar shells exploded at the soccer field just in front of the Royal Marine Commandos. The green bereted commandos went into action with rifles and automatic weapons. Nationalists returned the fire.
