  • Description

It's Carnival time in Holland and practically the whole population of Sittard turns out to watch the festivities of the town's own carnival parade. Like carnivals the world over, the parade presents humorous and satirical floats bearing topical effigies --the Russian Sputnik - and the unsuccessful U.S. Navy rocket. There is a bicycle made for a crowd of people and other improbable inventions. This year's Carnival 'Price' of Sittard is local journalist Friso Endt and one of his duties is to throw oranges to the celebrating crowd. Carnivals in Holland are held chiefly in the South of Holland (Sittard is in South Limburg) where the population is almost 100 per cent of the Catholic religion.
