    WORK BEGAN OFFICIALLY YESTERDAY (1 SEPTEMBER) ON THE GBP19,000,000 STERLING MILE -(1.6-KILOMETRE) LONG TUNNEL THAT WILL LINK THE ISLAND OF HONG KONG WITH MAINLAND CHINA.

    THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG, SIR DAVID TRENCH, SYMBOLICALLY TURNED A SPADEFUL OF EARTH WITH A SILVER SHOVEL TO MARK THE START OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FOUR-LANE TUNNEL.

    SIR DAVID AND MR J.L. MARDEN, CHAIRMAN OF THE CROSS HARBOUR TUNNEL COMPANY LIMITED, ONE OF THE COMPANIES OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONSORTIUM THAT IS BUILDING THE TUNNEL, THEN UNVEILED A PLAQUE TO COMMEMORATE THE OCCASION.

    THE TUNNEL IS BEING FINANCED BY A LOAN GUARANTEED BY THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.
