    President Felix Houphouet-Boigny of the Ivory Coast opened the Pasteur Institute at Adiopodoume, near Abidjan, on Tuesday (21 Nov).

    The Institute has been partly financed by the European Development Fund (FED). The fund provided 412 million CFA France (690,000 sterling) for the Institute, which coat a total of 521 million (870,000 sterling).

    The Pasteur Institute has been placed under the control of the Ivory Coast Ministers of Public Health, Scientific Research and Finance. It has two branches of which The Adiopodoume Centre concentrates on research into virology, immunology, biochemistry and entomology.

    The second branch is located at the Cocody Laboratories in Abidjan. This centre will concentrate on bacteriology, parasitology, biochemistry, anatomy and pathology.

    During the opening ceremonies, President Houphoust-Boigny said that after making important strides forward in the fields of medical treatment and education, the country's health authorities had not turned their attention to research.
