  • Description

A 45-man delegation from the Israeli-controlled Gaza Strip -- formerly Egyptian -- asked King Hussein of Jordan for concessions to Gaza citizens similar to those enjoyed by inhabitants of the Israeli-controlled, formerly Jordanian, West Bank.

The delegation, led by Mayor Rashad Al-Shawwa, met the King in Raghadan Palace in Amman on Tuesday (August 15). Delegates included businessman, heads of municipal councils, doctors and lawyers from throughout Gaza. They also asked King Hussein, flanked by Prime Minister Ahmed Louzi and advisors, for easier entry to Jordan by Gaza Strip inhabitants already enjoyed by West Bank citizens. Other requests were for scholarships for Gaza students to enter the state-run Jordanian university, and a plea for pardons for some convicted Gaza inhabitants.

It was Mayor Shawwa's second visit to Jordan in two months. Two days before his Tuesday meeting with King Hussein, Mayor Shawwa said he would like to see Gaza and the West Bank linked after the eventual withdrawal of Isareli troops.
