    FOR 111 MILES OF THE 113 - MILE RACE, SCHAUZU WAS CHASING AN INVISIBLE COMPETITOR. THE REIGNING WORLD CHAMPION, WEST GERMAN KLAUS ENDERS, WAS ABOUT A MINUTE AND ONLY A HALF AHEAD OF SCHAUZU.

    ENDERS BROKE THE LAP RECORD FROM A STANDING START AND THEN PUSHED IT TO 94.32 MILES AN HOUR. SCHAUZU HAD VIRTUALLY SETTLED FOR SECOND PLACE, BUT TWO MILES FROM THE FINISH HE SAW ENDERS AND HIS PASSENGER, R. ENGELHARDT, PUSHING THEIR MACHINE.

    SCHAUZU'S WINNING TIME WAS ONE HOUR, 14 MINUTES 34.2 SECONDS. IN SECOND PLACE WAS ANOTHER WEST GERMAN, L. ATTENBERGER, WITH H. LUTHRINGSHAUSER, OF WEST GERMANY THIRD, THE PLACEGETTERS WERE ALL ON B.M.W's.
