Background: Apprentices and trainees from fifteen countries are taking part in the 19th International Vocational Training Competition - called the Craft Olympics - Chiba, near Tokyo, Japan. Two-hundred-and-seventy-four competitors are entered for 30 events which range from plumbing and welding, via radio repairing and watch-making, to bricklaying and painting and decorating. It is the first time that the competitions have been held in Asia. Most of the competitors are still from European countries. The Asian competitors are from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
The Craft Olympics were opened in Tokyo by Crown Prince Akihito and Princes Michiko. In his address and Prince said he hoped the contests would contribute to the promotion of peace and prosperity in the world. After the opening ceremony the competitors moved to Chiba thirty miles away for the competitions. The closing ceremony will be on Thursday, 19 November.
