Background: In and around Mlanje, S. Nyasaland, March 8 VISNEWS filmed road blocks, deserted homes and Asian evacuees.
A crowd of 500 African rioters terrorized workers at tea estates in the area
March 7, set up road blocks of felled jungle trees and oil barrels, and moved on
to the trading centre at Limbuli.
As Limbuli they set fire to huts, wrecked a petrol pump and tore down telephone
wires. Film shows livestock and dogs roaming through the deserted streets.
Intimidated Asians fled from Limbuli and from stores along the road between
Mlanje and the Portuguese East African border. They are seen gathered in
Meanwhile troops and police have regained control over the area. In a sweep the
security forces rounded up most of the rioters who were warned against further
lawlessness by the District Commissioner and sent back to work. Some 150 major
conspirators are under arrest.
Trouble is still brewing in the Northern Province where the rioters are
concentrating their activity mainly on Karonga.
