  • Description

In Iran, there've been massive demonstrations against the Shah's regime at the end of the Muslim fast of Ramadan. The protestors blame the government for the deaths of seven demonstrators in clashes with security forces earlier this month.

SYNOPSIS: In the capital of Teheran troops kept a close watch on the city as small groups organised their protests at neighbourhood mosques. Several processions converged on a central square in the city.

Carrying portraits of an exiled Muslim leader, the demonstrator paraded down a main street. More than two hundred thousand people took part.

Prayers underlined the peaceful nature of the protest. At one point troops standing by in their trucks were pelted with flowers. But demonstrations in other parts of the country were more violent. Reuters news agency reported that in the Western city of Ilam four people were killed.

While the Teheran rally continued without incident just outside the city in Karaj two demonstrators died and in the holy city of Qom there were two more killings. For the first time, women took part in a political procession, carrying banners along with the other protestors.

There were chants of "Death to the Shah" and demands for an end to his rule, which the demonstrators described as repressive and autocratic. The rallies were organised by religious leaders, who have become a focal point of opposition to the Shah's regime. There were calls for the return of one prominent Muslim, Atatollah Khomeiny, exiled 15 years ago after anti-government rioting in the capital. Organisers said they would continue the series of protests, which have already resulted in a death toll of fifteen during five days of marches and rioting.
