  • Description

An unusually savage Viet Cong attack on a tiny village south of Danamg last Friday (June 12) cost the lives of 120 civilians, including women and children, and injured 80 others.

Eyewitnesses reported that a force of around 200 Viet Cong guerillas swept into the village after gunners had pounded it mercilessly with mortar bombs.

At the attackers moved through the village they slaughtered civilian families who had escaped the initial mortar attack and were hiding in their house bunkers.

The mortar fire included white phosphorous rounds, which have intense burning power, and many who survived the massacre bear appalling wounds.

The South Vietnamese Government has called for an international investigation into the incident - the latest and most severe in a series of Viet Cong attacks on civilians.

According to reports, in the last six weeks more than 350 South Vietnamese civilians have been killed and over a thousand injured in the five northern provinces alone. Observers believe the Viet Cong objective may be to induce small, vulnerable communities like Thanh My to co-operate with them or risk a similar fate.
